4-(1H-Benzo[D]imidazol-2-yl)phenol hydrochloride is a fluorescent compound that is used in the study of signal transduction pathways. It has been shown to bind to the hydrophobic pocket of the Aequorin protein and activate it, which causes an increase in fluorescence. 4-(1H-Benzo[D]imidazol-2-yl)phenol hydrochloride has been shown to have a number of biological properties, including anti-cancer activity and DNA repair. 4-(1H-Benzo[D]imidazol-2-yl)phenol hydrochloride binds to the polymerase enzyme and inhibits DNA synthesis, leading to cell death by preventing DNA repair. This chemical has also been shown to cause cardiac muscle cells in ventricles to stop contracting, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the function of myofibrillar proteins.
