3,3-Dimethylheptane is a chemical compound that is used as an actuator in the field of chromatographic science. It has been found to have a high degree of deformation and is capable of being programmed for different functions. 3,3-Dimethylheptane can also be used as an isomer; it has two possible forms. One form, which has four methyl groups, has an electron density that can be detected with Raman spectroscopy. The other form, which only has three methyl groups, cannot be detected by Raman spectroscopy. This compound can be used to analyze carbon tetrachloride samples and is useful in clinics where tests need to be conducted quickly. 3,3-Dimethylheptane is able to cross cell membranes because its size allows it to diffuse through the lipid bilayer membrane into cells. This molecule also binds to glycoconjugates on low energy surfaces and can be analyzed using chromatography techniques.
