Coniferyl benzoate is a naturally occurring ester found in the leaves of plants. It belongs to a group of compounds known as cinnamic acid derivatives and has been shown to have various physiological effects, such as increasing serum levels of prolactin and lowering body temperature. Coniferyl benzoate also inhibits nerve cells from releasing pain-causing chemicals, which may be due to its ability to increase the production of acetylcholine. This chemical has been investigated for its potential use in pharmaceutical preparations, such as topical creams, lotions, and toothpastes. There is some evidence that coniferyl benzoate can be toxic when administered orally or topically in large concentrations.
