It has been shown to have antiepileptic activity in animal models, and can be used as a substitute for phenytoin. 2-Ethylhexanamide is also metabolized to form an amide with chloride ions, which may be responsible for its anti-epileptic effects. The pharmacokinetics of 2-ethylhexanamide are well understood in animals and humans, where it is eliminated unchanged in the urine. This drug also has functional groups that allow it to react with other compounds and undergo biotransformation reactions.
