(2S)-4-Oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is an analog of the amino acid Proline. It has been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo and in vitro. This compound binds to the n-cadherin and inhibits the binding of this protein with its ligands, leading to decreased cell adhesion and increased cell death. (2S)-4-Oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid also binds to collagen, which may be due to its hydroxyl group, and inhibits the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans by lipase. The aromatic hydrocarbon moiety has been shown to be a lipase inhibitor that prevents hydrolysis of fatty acids by lipases. (2S)-4-Oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid can catalyze reactions involving carbonyl groups or hydroxyl groups.
