N-(Pyridin-2-yl)benzamide (NPA) is a ligand that selectively binds to the 5-HT1A receptor. It has been shown to inhibit 5-HT1A receptor mediated effects, such as maleate-induced contraction of rat ileum and inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cAMP production in rat pheochromocytoma cells. NPA has been used in pharmaceutical dosage forms and was found to be stable at pH 7.0 and 37°C, with a melting point of 162°C. In addition, it can be synthesized from 2-aminopyridine and benzoyl chloride by a cross coupling reaction. NPA is also used for the preparation of 5-HT1A receptor agonists.
