5-methoxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one is an organic compound that has been found to have clinical usefulness in the treatment of herpes simplex virus. It is a potent inhibitor of the ATPase activity of the human transport chain, and has also shown potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. 5-methoxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one may be active against other viruses as well as fungi. The molecule also inhibits the production of fatty acids by inhibiting cytochrome P450 enzymes and oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This compound also has antifungal properties, which may be related to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in fungal cells.
