Atisinium chloride is a diterpenoid alkaloid that can be synthesized from the plant-derived material. It has been shown to have antifeedant properties in mammalian cells and has been used as a test compound in chromatographic analysis of cultured cells. The industrial production of atisinium chloride is based on the reaction with an organic solvent, such as chloroform. The molecule consists of two rings: one consisting of six carbons and one consisting of eight carbons. The molecule also exhibits fluorescence when irradiated by ultraviolet light, which can be observed with spectroscopic data analysis. Crystals of Atisinium chloride have been obtained from treatments with the heavy metal, lead, or salts containing other metals.
