7-Norbornadienyl benzoate is a synthetic compound that belongs to the ether class. It is an anionic compound, which means it can form salts with strong acids such as hydrochloric acid. 7-Norbornadienyl benzoate has been used to synthesize steroids and diels-alder adducts. The sigmatropic reaction of this compound was first described by William S. Knowles in 1965, when he found that it led to the formation of cycloadditions. This reaction was later used by Michael T. Smith in 1969 for the synthesis of 1,4-cyclohexadiene derivatives from butadiene and benzaldehyde.
