2-Dodecylthiophene is a small molecule with a molecular weight of 252.2 Da and a chemical formula of C12H26OS. 2-Dodecylthiophene has been synthesized by the reaction of 2-dodecylmercaptan with thionyl chloride, which results in the formation of an amide bond between the two molecules. This compound has shown to be an optical sensor for detecting nitroaromatic explosives. It also exhibits fluorescence properties, as well as signal detection and polymer film formation. Other notable characteristics are that it is conductive and hydrophobic, and can react with fatty acids to form fatty acid esters.
