4-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-1,2-dimethylbenzene (4DMPB) is a synthetic chemical that has been used as a dyes intermediate and as an additive in the manufacture of polyester resins. It is also used to make other chemical compounds such as biphenyl and trifluoroacetic acid. 4DMPB has been shown to cause hydronephrosis in rats at high doses. This chemical reacts with radiation and can form reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may be responsible for its carcinogenic effects. 4DMPB fluoresces under UV light and emits toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when heated or decomposed.
