2-Hydroxyethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is a polyester that is produced by the dehydration of ethylene glycol and 2-hydroxyethanol. It is a biodegradable, degradable, and regenerative material that can be used in biomedical applications such as scaffolds for tissue engineering. The hydroxy group on the molecule has been shown to prevent protein adhesion and degradation. This product has been shown to inhibit growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, which may be due to its ability to block the activity of cellular enzymes.
