The anion of this compound is spirolactam, which is an endogenous substance. The sensor yields fluorescence when excited with light in the near infrared region at 710 nm. This emission can be enhanced by nitrosohydroxylamine, which is a fluorophore. When excited in the visible region of the spectrum, 2-(Pyridin-2-ylmethoxy)benzaldehyde emits red light. It has been shown to have biomolecular applications, including quantum yields that are important for understanding how enzymes function in living systems.
