5-Methyl-2-heptanol is a trimethyl compound that has been found to be present in the headspace of rat kidneys. It has been quantified using solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography with electron capture detection, which is a technique used to identify volatile compounds. The presence of 5-methyl-2-heptanol was also confirmed by regression analysis and linear regression analysis. This chemical has also been shown to have fatty acid ester hydrolase activity and can produce furfural and aldehydes when heated. 5-Methyl-2-heptanol can be found in proximal tubules, where it may play a role in renal function.
