Ethyl 4-cyclohexyl-4-oxobutyrate is a synthetic retinoid that has been shown to be effective in treating cancer. It has been used in the treatment of malignant melanoma, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer. This compound has been shown to have a terminal half-life of about 15 hours in plasma samples and is metabolized by CYP2C9 and CYP3A4. The biological properties of this compound are similar to those of endogenous retinoids, with the exception that it does not require encapsulation for delivery. Ethyl 4-cyclohexyl-4-oxobutyrate is a test compound that binds to histone lysine residues, which may contribute to its anti-cancer effects. This compound is an isomer of butanediol and can be synthesized from butyraldehyde via chlorination followed by hydrolysis.
