Dapivirine-d11 is a prodrug that is metabolized to dapivirine, its active form. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of creatine kinase, which is an enzyme that plays a role in the metabolism of creatine and the synthesis of phosphocreatine. Dapivirine-d11 has been shown to be effective against hiv infection in tissue culture assays and animal models. It also has anti-hiv activity in uninfected human tissues and may be used for the treatment of hepatitis caused by hiv. Clinical trials are underway to determine its clinical relevance for HIV treatment.
