Descripción:Mesotrione is a herbicide that belongs to the class of phenylpyrazole compounds. It is used for selective post-emergence weed control in corn, soybeans, and other crops. Mesotrione inhibits plant growth by inhibiting an enzyme called acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase, which is essential for fatty acid synthesis. This compound has been shown to be genotoxic in mammalian cells and plants when it binds with DNA and induces the formation of bulky adducts. The mechanism of mesotrione's genotoxicity has been studied using a model system involving E coli bacteria and monoclonal antibodies that are specific for the herbicide's metabolites. Chronic exposure to this compound may result in increased risk of cancer.
