(Z)-5-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione is a tyrosinase inhibitor that blocks the enzyme's active site. It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme's activity in vitro and in vivo. The inhibition of tyrosinase activity can be used as a measure for the compound's efficacy in inhibiting melanin production. This substance has also been shown to have no effect on other protein targets such as prostaglandins, and does not affect the kinetics of tyrosinase or the rate of diffraction due to its magnetic properties. (Z)-5-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione may be useful for cosmetic applications or treating diseases related to melanin production such as hyperpigmentation or erythroderma.
