FR194738 is a synthetic statin that inhibits cholesterol synthesis. It has been shown to be effective in lowering cholesterol levels, as well as reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease and stroke. FR194738 inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is an important regulator of cholesterol synthesis by blocking the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor for cholesterol production. The clinical use of FR194738 has not been determined, but it has been shown to have inhibitory effects on fatty acid biosynthesis and epoxidase activity in vitro.
