Caesalmin E is a chemical analog of the natural product caesalpinin. It has been postulated that it may have antiviral and anticancer activity. Caesalmin E was shown to inhibit influenza virus neuraminidase and influenza virus biosynthesis pathways, although its mechanism of action is unknown. Crystallography studies revealed that Caesalmin E binds to the erythrocyte surface protein band 3, which is involved in the regulation of ion transport across the cell membrane, suggesting that CAESALMIN-E may have an effect on cell membrane permeability.
