It is an excellent substrate for the enzyme β-glucosidase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of ester bonds in glycosides with release of glucose and formation of a phenolic product. The 4-nitrophenol group reacts with oxygen to produce light, making it useful as a chemiluminescent or bioluminescent substrate.
