Adipic acid monoethyl ester is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It is used in various commercial preparations such as pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and food additives. Adipic acid monoethyl ester has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on enzymes that are important for the metabolism of glucose. These enzymes include glycol-ester hydrolases, which catalyze reactions that produce fatty acids from glycerol and fatty acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) by hydrolysis.
