It has been shown to be an effective insect repellent, with an LD50 of 14 mg/kg. This compound also has a high affinity for protonated amines and amino acids, which may account for its adsorption to riparia. Ethyl 2-methoxybenzoate is biosynthesized from monoketones and monohydric alcohols. The hydroxyl group on the benzoic acid moiety reacts with methyl anthranilate to produce ethyl 2-methoxybenzoate.
