It is a crystalline solid that can be obtained through dehydration of 6-amino-5-nitrosohydantoin, which is also known as 5,6-diaminopyrimidine. It reacts with piperidine to produce piperidinium ions. 6-Amino-5-nitroso-3-methyluracil has been shown to exist in two forms: neutral and exocyclic. The neutral form is more stable than the exocyclic form, which exhibits intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
