Adriamycinone hydrochloride is a derivative of the anthracycline anti-cancer drug, adriamycin. Adriamycinone hydrochloride binds to the D-ribose in DNA and prevents DNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme topoisomerase II. This results in cell death and inhibition of tumor growth. Adriamycinone hydrochloride also has antiviral properties that are due to its ability to inhibit viral RNA replication. It has been shown to be effective against influenza virus, which is an infectious disease caused by a virus with a segmented RNA genome. Adriamycinone hydrochloride can also bind to damaged DNA, as well as sequences that are important for viral replication such as the cap-dependent endonuclease. This drug also inhibits the production of antimicrobial peptides (e.g., adipose) and inhibits cap-dependent endonuclease activity, both of which play a role in inflammation and tissue destruction
