Descripción

Avibactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor that inhibits the activity of β-lactamases, enzymes that destroy penicillins and cephalosporins. Avibactam binds to the active site of β-lactamases and blocks the access of the substrate to the enzyme. Avibactam is effective against bacteria resistant to ceftazidime, such as Escherichia coli, and has been shown to inhibit other types of β-lactamases. This drug has also been shown to be effective in inhibiting human serum albumin (HSA) from binding with penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. This inhibition prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with protein synthesis required for bacterial cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
