Z-Ala-Val-OH is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to ala-z-valine in vivo. It has been shown to be resistant to enzymes such as esterases, amidases, and proteases. Z-Ala-Val-OH has been modified in an effort to increase its affinity for the active site of the enzyme. This modification involves attaching a hydrophobic group onto the amide nitrogen of the amino acid residue. The resulting product is an active ester that can be used as an antihypertensive drug or for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
