4-Amino-N-(4-chlorophenyl)benzenesulfonamide is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of aminosulfonamides. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. 4-Amino-N-(4-chlorophenyl)benzenesulfonamide binds to the bacterial enzyme, DNA gyrase, which is vital for DNA replication and transcription. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The drug has been shown to be effective in treating patients with chronic ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
