4-Amino-2,6-dimethylphenol is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of arylating agents. It reacts with glutathione in the liver, forming an imine. This reaction results in glutathione depletion and cellular toxicity. The cytotoxic effect of 4-Amino-2,6-dimethylphenol has been shown in rat liver microsomes and rat liver cells. In addition, it induces oxidative stress by reacting with intracellular glutathione and causing sulphydryl groups to be oxidized to disulphides. 4-Amino-2,6-dimethylphenol also inhibits the activity of microsomal drug metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450 enzymes.
