N-Acetyl-N-(2-oxopropyl)acetamide is a hydration agent that is detectable by its high affinity for water molecules. This compound is hydrated and has an isotope effect on the nature of nucleophilic reactions. N-Acetyl-N-(2-oxopropyl)acetamide has a proton at the alpha carbon, which can be substituted with a variety of functional groups to produce acetals, acetones, and chloroacetone derivatives. The chloromethyl ketone derivative of N-Acetyl-N-(2-oxopropyl)acetamide reacts with tosylglycine to form an aldehyde product that is brominated by bromoacetone.
