Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a surfactant that is used in the laboratory to create micelles. The micelles have an interparticle distance of about 10 nm. SDS is ionic and hydrophilic with a high affinity for water molecules, which are attracted by the negative charge on its head group. This property makes it useful as a detergent in many applications, including cleaning products and shampoo.
