It is used as a fluorescent probe for in vitro assays and is capable of cross-coupling with electron-deficient alkenes. 1-(Azidomethyl)pyrene can be synthesized using a solid-phase synthesis procedure. The fluorescence properties of this molecule are significant cytotoxicity to cancer cells, as well as architectures that can be conjugated to polyethylene glycols. These conjugates can then be used in the treatment of cancer through light exposure.
