2-Aminonicotinamide is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that is structurally related to the neurotransmitter nicotinic acid. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, with the ability to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin (IL)-6 in breast cancer cells. 2-Aminonicotinamide also has antimicrobial activity against Candida glabrata, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can be used as an antiviral agent for treatment of human cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus infections. 2-Aminonicotinamide may have anticancer effects by inhibiting mitosis and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells.
