(S)-2-Amino-3-methoxypropanoic acid is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of hydroxylated amino acids. It has minimal activity against mycobacterium avium and is not active against clinical isolates of herpes simplex virus. The compound is a deuterium isotope analog, which was synthesized by substituting the hydrogen atom with deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen. Hydrogen bonding has been shown to be important for this compound's activity and it binds to the mitochondrial cytochrome P450 enzyme in human liver cells. (S)-2-Amino-3-methoxypropanoic acid also inhibits apoptosis in cultured human cells.
