Ammoniumxylenesulfonate is a quaternary ammonium salt that can be used as a conditioning agent for hair. It is often used in conjunction with ethylene diamine, deionized water, and inorganic acid to create a 40% ammonium xylenesulfonate solution. This solution has been shown to cause mild damage to the hair shaft, which may be due to its ability to bind metal ions and form insoluble particles. Ammonium xylenesulfonate also acts as a conditioning agent by coating the hair shaft. This coating prevents the penetration of other conditioning agents and allows for high concentrations of natural products that are applied afterward, such as oils or silicones.
