Flupirtine is a painkiller that acts as an apoptotic agent by inhibiting the activation of phospholipase A2 (PLA2). Flupirtine is also neuroprotective and has shown to reduce the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in mice. Flupirtine has been shown to have pharmacological effects on the cardiovascular system, such as lipid metabolism, and may be therapeutically effective against some types of cancer. Flupirtine has also been shown to have pluripotent properties, which means it can differentiate into cells from more than one embryonic tissue type. This makes flupirtine useful for drug discovery since it allows researchers to study how drugs behave when they are not specific to a certain cell type.
