5-Amino-3-methyl-4-isoxazolecarbonitrile (AMI) is a molecule that has been shown to have anti HIV activity. It is an electrophilic compound that can react with nucleophiles, such as nitrogen atoms in the cell membrane and the ring of penicillin. The reactive center of AMI is the C=N bond in the isoxazole ring. The antibacterial properties of AMI are thought to be due to its ability to react with DNA, protein, and RNA. This reaction leads to crosslinking between these molecules and inhibition of their synthesis.
