4-Aminobenzoic acid is an organic compound that is classified as a carboxylic acid. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 134 degrees Celsius. The most common occurrence of 4-aminobenzoic acid is in the form of its salt, benzoate, which is found in many foods and drinks. This compound is also used in the synthesis of other compounds such as esters, amides, and sulfonic acids. 4-Aminobenzoic acid has been shown to function as a lipase inhibitor and also has antioxidant properties. 4-Aminobenzoic acid is racemic; it can be synthesized from both L and D forms of aminoethanol. Acetylation of this compound occurs through the addition of acetic anhydride to one side or the other, depending on whether it was derived from the L or D form.
