2-Acetylindole is a chemical compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. 2-Acetylindole is synthesized by asymmetric synthesis using a biomimetic approach. The synthesis starts with the reduction of pyridinium salt, which releases indole from the pyridine ring. The acetyl group is then added to the indole nitrogen atom, forming 2-acetylindole. This compound has been shown to be a potent antibacterial agent against bacterial enzymes such as penicillinase and β-lactamase. 2-Acetylindole also has a carbonyl group, which can react with nucleophiles such as hydroxide ion and water to form enolate ions.
