AG 1296 is a tyrphostin, which is a class of small molecule inhibitors. It inhibits tyrosine kinase and prevents the phosphorylation of tyrosine residues on proteins. AG 1296 has been shown to inhibit nuclear DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) in vitro and in vivo. This drug also inhibits the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) response element. AG 1296 has synergistic effects on cells when used with PDGF-BB, which may be due to its ability to protect proteins from oxidation by reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide or nitric oxide. AG 1296 also has an effect on bowel disease and can be used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease as well as Crohn's disease. One study showed that this drug had hypoglycemic activity in mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus, but did not have any significant effect on glucose levels in healthy mice.
