N-Acetyl-S-(N-methylcarbamoyl)-L-cysteine is a potent inhibitor of receptor binding. It inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase and 5-lipoxygenase, which are enzymes that produce inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. N-Acetyl-S-(N-methylcarbamoyl)-L-cysteine has been shown to inhibit skin cancer cells in a multicenter phase II trial. The compound was detected in urine samples and showed a linear calibration curve with signal detection at concentrations as low as 0.1 ng/mL. The compound also inhibited the growth of human leukemia cells and decreased the level of acidic phospholipids in human erythrocytes. N-Acetyl-S-(N-methylcarbamoyl)-L-cysteine can be used to prevent sample preparation from interfering with subsequent analysis.
