Althiazide is a drug that has been used for the treatment of high blood pressure, as well as bowel disease. Althiazide blocks the action of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type IV (PDE4) and is able to reduce blood pressure. It also inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids and surfactant proteins, which are important in maintaining healthy lung function. Althiazide has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). This drug also reduces x-ray diffraction data, which is an analytical method used to determine crystal structure.
