Amlodipine besylate is a calcium channel blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure. It has a phase transition temperature of less than or equal to 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit). Amlodipine besylate should not be taken with other drugs that can affect the heart such as diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and beta-blockers. The pharmacological effects of amlodipine besylate are similar to those of losartan. However, when amlodipine besylate is given orally for long periods of time, it shows greater efficacy in reducing blood pressure than losartan. This drug also has a low risk for interactions with other drugs when taken over a long period of time.
Amlodipine besylate should not be used by people who have liver impairment because this medication may cause accumulation in the body and lead to serious side effects.
