2-Amino-2-thiazoline is an organic compound that is used as a solvent, in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, and to produce azo dyes. It has been shown to be cytotoxic in tissue culture and genotoxic in biological studies. 2-Amino-2-thiazoline has also been reported to react with the hydrochloric acid present in stomach acid to form nitrosamines. 2-Amino-2-thiazoline reacts with hydroxylamine, forming a redox potential between -0.4 and -1.5 volts. The molecule itself is not stable, but it reacts with other molecules to form stable compounds such as 2-(methylamino) benzonitrile or 2-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile. These compounds are considered carcinogenic because they can form DNA adducts that cause mutations in the genetic material of cells, leading to cancerous growths.
