Adarotene is a cytosolic calcium ionophore that has potent inducers of chemiluminescence. It is a synthetic retinoid that binds to the nuclear retinoid receptor and induces transcription of genes. Adarotene has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and act as an anti-cancer compound. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique has been used to measure adarotene concentration in t-cell lymphomas. Adarotene is toxic to cells and causes cellular physiology changes by altering mitochondrial membrane potential.
