2-Amino-6-methylnicotinonitrile is a heterocyclic compound that belongs to the class of nitro compounds. It is an enantioselective alkylation agent and a good reducing agent. 2-Amino-6-methylnicotinonitrile is used in organic chemistry as a building block for the synthesis of tetracyclic, n-substituted, and alkylated heterocycles. It can be synthesized by reduction reactions or by spontaneous cyclization with ethyl nitroacetate. The pyrimidine ring system has been shown to be present in some natural products such as the antibiotic fusidic acid.
