The maleimido group in this compound reacts with the nucleophilic groups on proteins to form stable covalent bonds, which can be observed by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. This chemical probe has been used to image glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 receptors in the pancreas and insulinomas, as well as reactive regions of the brain. The uptake of N-(2-Aminoethyl)maleimide trifluoroacetic acid can be enhanced through functionalizing the molecule with reactive groups such as maleimido or trifluoroacetate.
