N-Amyl-N-methylnitrosamine (NMNE) is a carcinogenic compound that belongs to the nitrosamines. NMNE has been shown to cause cervical cancer in CD-1 mice and is considered a good experimental model for human squamous cell carcinoma. NMNE causes DNA damage by interacting with nuclear DNA, and it also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to apoptosis. NMNE can be metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver, leading to increased levels of reactive metabolites that contribute to its carcinogenic potential. Chronic exposure to NMNE may lead to squamous cell carcinomas in rats.
