2,3-Anthraquinonedicarboxylic acid is a molecule that can be synthesized by the dehydration of 4-tert-butylbenzoic acid in the presence of fluorine and chlorine. This compound has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. 2,3-Anthraquinonedicarboxylic acid inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the functional groups on ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis. The molecular structure of 2,3-anthraquinonedicarboxylic acid contains a double bond between carbons 2 and 3, which is broken down during synthesis. This reaction forms a disulfide bond.
