Aristolochic acid C is a natural compound that belongs to the class of aristolactams. It has been found to have cytotoxic activity against myeloma cells, and a monoclonal antibody has been developed for use in the treatment of urothelial carcinoma. Aristolochic acid C is used as an additive to herbal medicine in China and has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects. The roots of aconite contain aristolochic acid C, which may be responsible for its toxicity. The sodium salt of aristolochic acid C can be prepared by reacting sodium hydroxide with fructus aristolochiae (the fruit of Aristolochia clematitis).
